Collection: Automatic Cat Toys

Automatic cat toys move on their own, so your cat gets a moving target even when your hands are busy. This collection covers electric cat toys that roll, spin, pop up, lift and drop, or flap on touch, including SPEEDY TAIL 2.0, a rechargeable moving tail cat toy that changes speed and direction by itself. Compare motion style, power and timers below, then match the toy to the way your cat likes to hunt.

An automatic cat toy uses a motor to create movement without you: rolling, spinning, a hidden feather or a lure that lifts and drops. The best choice matches your cat’s hunting style. Floor chasers suit rolling tail toys, jumpers suit overhead lures, and cautious cats often do better with touch-activated toys that rest between bursts.

How to choose an automatic cat toy

Pick the movement your cat already chases

Floor chasers: Speedy Tail 2.0, Turbo Tail 2.0, Interactive Rolling Ball™ and Interactive Crawling Crab™ travel across the floor. Ambushers: HuntPad Pro™ moves a feather under a mat on random 360° routes, and WhiskerQuest pops a target through four top openings while a feather rotates below. Jumpers: YoYo Chase™ and Capybara Pop-Up™ raise and lower a lure from a mounted unit, and Intelligent Cat Stick Pro moves a tail from a suction base.

Continuous, timed or touch-activated

HuntMaster™’s Auto mode runs for 15 minutes, rests for 2 hours and stops after five cycles. WobbleWing™ stops after about 15 minutes. Turbo Tail 2.0 pauses after five minutes of inactivity and wakes with a touch. Floppy Fish Mini™, Flying Bird 2.0, ChirpBuddy and FlutterBloom move only when batted, then rest.

Rechargeable or batteries

Most toys here charge by USB or USB-C. WobbleWing takes 2 AA batteries (not included), and Wild Wing Chase is rechargeable.

Floor space and mounting

Rolling toys need a clear, level floor away from stairs and cords, and the Hunting Cover play mat (sold separately) helps keep them from vanishing under furniture. Mounted toys need a clean, smooth, structurally suitable surface and a mount check before every session.

Looking for a speed tail or moving tail cat toy?

Speedy Tail 2.0 is our moving tail cat toy: automatic, USB-C rechargeable and designed to change speed and direction on suitable hard floors and carpet. If you’d rather steer the chase yourself, Turbo Tail 2.0 adds a remote-controlled Manual mode alongside its self-driving Smart mode.

Safety tips for automatic toys

  • Start at the slowest setting on a level floor away from stairs, cords, water and breakable objects.
  • Supervise early sessions and inspect shells, tails, strings and charging ports; stop if a casing opens or a part loosens.
  • Keep strings and cords from looping around cats, people or furniture.
  • Test suction and adhesive mounts by hand before each session.
  • Switch toys off and store them after play, and rotate them rather than leaving one running all day.

Why cat owners choose Purrfect Day

Automatic Cat Toys: frequently asked questions

Do automatic cat toys really work?

They work best as a supplement to playing with your cat, not a replacement. A moving target gives your cat something to stalk when your hands are busy, and toys that change speed or direction hold attention longer than predictable ones. Rotate them, keep sessions short and supervise, especially while your cat is still getting used to a new toy.

Are automatic cat toys safe?

They can be when used as directed. Start on a clear, level floor, supervise early sessions and inspect shells, tails and strings before each use. Stop if a casing cracks or a part loosens. Test mounts by hand every time, keep cords from looping around pets, and switch toys off and store them after play.

Can I leave an automatic cat toy on while I’m at work?

We recommend supervised play for every toy in this collection. Timers and standby modes, such as HuntMaster’s rest cycles or Turbo Tail 2.0’s standby, limit how long a toy runs, but they don’t replace checking for loose parts or tangled strings. Switch toys off and put them away before you leave the house.

What is a moving tail cat toy?

A moving tail cat toy pairs a motorized body with a tail attachment that trails and flicks as the toy moves, giving your cat something to stalk and grab. Speedy Tail 2.0 is ours: it changes speed and direction on its own, re-engages when your cat touches it and recharges over USB-C.

Which automatic cat toy is best for a nervous cat?

Start with a toy that moves only when touched, such as Floppy Fish Mini or FlutterBloom, so your cat decides when the action begins. Let your cat inspect it while it is switched off, use the slowest setting on multi-speed toys and keep an exit route clear. Stop if your cat seems uncomfortable and try again another day.

Do automatic cat toys need batteries?

Most toys here are rechargeable by USB or USB-C, including Speedy Tail 2.0, Turbo Tail 2.0, YoYo Chase and WhiskerQuest. WobbleWing uses 2 AA batteries, which aren’t included. Check each product page for charging details and follow the supplied instructions; WhiskerQuest, for example, should be switched off while it charges.
